Primary & Secondary Index in sap

Primary Index: It is generated by SAP for the key fields in the table.
Secondary Index: Created by the developer to improve the performance when retrieving the data from the database.
Create the secondary index for the fields other than primary key.

Go to transaction SE11. 

For our demo purpose, we have considered the table ZVISITHDR.

To know if there are any secondary indexes available, click on Goto - Indexes

Go index

Following screen appears

 

Click on Create - Create Index

Enter the name of the index. 

Fill in the details – Short description and the fields in the index. 

Save and activate.
